ABOUT THE EVENT

The LPGA Tour, the pinnacle of world golf,
celebrates its 50th anniversary in Japan.

This tournament began in 1973 as the LPGA JAPAN CLASSIC, got promoted to an official event on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour in 1975. This gathering of the world’s top golfers underwent several name changes - the Mizuno Japan Golf Classic, Mazda Japan Classic, Toray Japan Queens Cup, and Mizuno Classic - before becoming the TOTO Japan Classic in 2015. This year marks the 50th edition of the tournament.

This tournament has seen many notable winners. In 1987, Ayako Okamoto finished second, becoming the first non-American to win the LPGA Tour’s money title. In 1996, Mayumi Hirase, competing as an LPGA Tour member, achieved her first victory on the LPGA tour. In 1998, Hiromi Kobayashi won, marking her second victory of the year on the LPGA tour. From 2001 to 2005, Annika Sorenstam became the first player in history to win five consecutive titles in the same tournament. Momoko Ueda, who won the title in 2007, began full - fledged participation in the LPGA Tour the following year. In 2018, Nasa Hataoka, in her second year on the LPGA tour, won with a total of 14 under par, showcasing her talent to the Japanese fans. Last year, Mone Inami secured her first LPGA Tour victory by holding off the competition by one stroke in a tight battle where seven players were within three strokes, laying the foundation for her full - scale participation in this year’s LPGA tour battle.

This tournament has served as a bridge between the LPGA and JLPGA tours and a triumphant return for players competing on the LPGA Tour. This year’s event is sure to write a new page in LPGA history.
